1323891 Self-opening umbrellas IDEAL K K 23 July 1970 [23 July 1969 (2)] 35680/70 Addition to 1316487 Heading A4P The umbrella disclosed in the parent Specification is modified by the provision of a tip cup 34 integral with or secured to the handle 5, and a resiliently mounted releasing means supported in the handle, said releasing means being engageable by the latch 30 and being displaceable when disengaged thereby to assist the release of the tips of the ribs from the tip cup when the umbrella is opened. The releasing means comprises a slidable tubular push-up member 35 having a slot 35a for the passage of a latch projection 30b, and a compressible coil spring 36 engaging the member 35 to bias it upwardly. Downward movement of the tubular push-up member by pulling downwardly on the grip tube 26 of the slider 23 compresses the spring 36. To open the umbrella the push-button 37 is depressed whereupon the latch projection 30b retreats and the latch projection 30a is relieved of its locking engagement. A resilient ring 19 is mounted on the slider 16 to encourage the ribs to part away from the shaft when the umbrella is to be opened, and a buffer (20), figure 1 (not shown), also in the form of a resilient ring is mounted on the shaft below the crown to alleviate the impact on the slider 16 and on the joints of the umbrella when fully opened. A protective tubular member 29 is slidably mounted on the shaft member 1 and anchored at its top end to the slider 16, to prevent the coil spring 28 from coming into contact with the shaft member 1. The handle 5 is secured to the lowermost end of the shaft member 4 by means of a fastening member 33.
