Abstract
1323530 Pneumatic conveyers; shoots KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUR 28 Oct 1971 50112/71 Headings B8A and B8S [Also in Division G1] Samples 15 and flow monitors 14 to be subjected to radiation and then to be delivered to separate measuring stations are secured to one end of a capsule 3 which is propelled pneumatically along a tube 5 to position the sample and flow monitors adjacent to the target 8 of a neutron generator 9. After radiation the capsule is returned to the other end of the tube 5 whereupon the sample and flow monitors are released from the capsule to drop down a shoot 6, the lower surface of which is formed by a pair of inclined rails 35 spaced apart a distance corresponding to the thickness of the flow monitors to allow some to pass therethrough and thence down a shoot 37 to a measuring station (not shown). The samples 15 which are thicker than the flow monitors pass down the rails to drop through an aperture 39 into a shoot 40 leading to another measurement station, not shown. The capsule 3 is substantially tubular in shape with ridges 16 at opposite ends to bear against the interior of the tube 5. Mounted within the capsule are three equi-angularly spaced arms 19 which are pivotally secured at one end to the capsule and project beyond the end face of the capsule at the other end to form a gripper for holding the sample and flow monitor in sandwich fashion. The arms 19 are urged towards each other by a rubber band 25 and have a wedge-shaped surface 13 for abutment with a disc 29 mounted on one end of a rod 18, the other end of which protrudes from the capsule to abut a stop 1 on the return of the capsule from the neutron generator. Such abutment forces the disc 29 along the surfaces to open the gripper and allow the sample and flow monitors to drop into the shoot 6. A spring 30 urges the rod 18 to return to its normal position.
