Abstract
132,303. Taylor, A., and Taylor, H. D. July 8, 1918. Telescope systems.-In order to obtain a large flat field substantially free from astigmatism, a low-power telescope or periscope is provided with a negative objective L<1>, a positive eyepiece L<4>, L<5>, and one or more positive compound projector objectives L<2> between the negative objective and the eyepiece, the power of the negative objective being substantially equal to the sum of the powers of all the positive lenses. The negative objective and the eyepiece may be compound achromatic lenses, or they may both consist of simple lenses or of pairs of simple lenses. A field lens L<3>, or alternatively a piece of plane glass, is provided on which a graticule &c. is marked. Optical data are given in the Specification. When the periscope is relatively long, the power of the lens L<2> is negligible compared with the powers of the remaining lenses, and, in this case, the sum of the powers of the negative lenses is approximately equal to the sum of the powers of the positive eyepiece lenses.
