Abstract

1322939 Chromium plating M & T CHEMICALS Inc 10 Sept 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 43377/70 Heading C7B Chromium is electro-deposited from an aqueous acidic solution substantially free of nitric acid or other oxidative catalyst and excluding any perflurocarbon sulphonic acid or salt thereof, the solution containing at least one chromium compound providing hexavalent chromium ions and also sulphate ions, cerous ions and fluoride or fluoride-containing complex ions. The fluoride may be present as fluosilicic acid or silicofluoride of Na, Sr, NH 4 , Mg or Ca, hydrofluoric acid or fluorides of Na, K, Ca, Ce(ous), or as complex ions including Al, B, Ti or Zr. Sulphuric acid or sulphate of Sr, NH 4 , Li, Ca may be used to provide sulphate ions. Ce may be present as fluoride, carbonate or sulphate. Preferably CeF 3 is present in amount to provide excess undissolved salt. With a CrO 3 content of 100- 600 g/l, electrolysis may be carried out at 30-70‹C at a current density of 1-90 amps/sq. decimetre.
