Abstract

In a process for the electro-deposition of chromium from a sodium tetrachromate electrolyte containing tetrachromate ions as the predominant chromium-containing constituent and having a CrO3; Na2O molar ratio of 3.5 - 8.0: 1 and a temperature of 18-40 DEG C., the electrolyte also includes in amounts calculated on the total CrO3 content 0.05-0.80% sulphate ions, and fluoride and titanate and/or zirconate ions or complex ions containing fluorine and titanium or zirconium in amounts providing 0.03-2.5% fluorine and a total of 0.1-2.0% titanium and zirconium. The electrolyte may contain 150-600 grams total CrO3 per litre, and may also contain 0.005-0.015 gm selenium in the form of a soluble selenium compound. According to ion-content and temperature of electrolyte, the resulting deposit may be bright or micro-cracked. The current density used may lie in the range 36-460 amps/sq.ft.
