1321278 Ion-exchange process PERMUTIT CO Ltd 4 Nov 1971 [11 Nov 1970 21 Jan 1971] 53708/70 and 2884/71 Heading BIJ A process for the ion-exchange treatment of liquid in which the liquid flows downwards through a two-part bed of ion-exchange resin in a vessel, the upper part of the bed being composed of resin having weak-exchange groups and the lower part being composed of resin having strong exchange groups, and the whole bed is regenerated from time to time, is characterised by introducing a substantial proportion at least of the total regenerant required at the bottom of the bed to flow upwards through the lower part, removing this regenerant through a collecting system adjacent the interface between the two parts of the bed, introducing some or all of the regenerant thus removed into the vessel above the bed to flow downwards through the upper part and regenerate it, and. removing this regenerant through a collecting system adjacent the interface between the two parts. The collecting system may be in two parts, an upper part above the interface to collect downward-flowing regenerant from the upper part of the bed and a lower part adjacent to the interface to collect upward-flowing regenerant from the lower part of the bed.
