Abstract

1321079 Blood typing apparatus TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 4 Sept 1970 [22 Sept 1969] 42501/70 Heading B1X Automatic analysis apparatus for analysing a series of samples, for example in blood typing, comprises means for forming each sample in the series of samples into a group of discrete sample portions and for passing the groups in succession as an inert fluid segmented stream through a flow path, and dispensing means for supplying a plurality of portions of different reagents into the flow bath for treating the sample portions for analysis; the dispensing means being operative to introduce each reagent portion only into a sample portion. In the embodiment disclosed, each sample is divided into six successive portions utilising the bar valve of Specification 1321080 and a different antiserum or blood cell type reagent is introduced into each sample portion. The off-take device of Figure 3 for use with blood samples has two inlet tubes 58, 46 for simultaneous off-take of blood cells and plasma into separate flow-paths, each portion being followed by wash-liquid introduced at 54, 42 respectively. The reagent dispenser (Figure 4) comprises housing 230 having a row of antisera containers 232, a row of reagent cell containers 234 and two washliquid troughs 260, 262. Arm 266 carrying probes 268, 270 communicating respectively with flow paths for bromelin-treated blood cells and plasma operates to allow take-off of each antiserum-reagent cell pair in turn, successive reagent portions in each probe line being separated by slugs of wash-liquid. After mixing of sample and reagent portions in each flow path, the two streams are diluted and passed through decant junctions, decanted material falling on to filter paper (Figures 12, 13, not shown) where agglutinated material (positive reactions) shows as darker spots.
