Abstract
1320335 Pneumatic actuators H W WEYMAN 25 Sept 1970 [25 Nov 1969] 57492/69 Heading F1D An hydraulically damped pneumatic cylinder assembly comprises a pneumatically operated piston 12 and rod 15 slidable in a cylinder 11, the hollow rod 15 forming the cylinder 31 of an hydraulic damping assembly. The chambers' on either side of piston 33 communicate with a valve assembly 51 through respective passages 47, 48 in a hydraulic piston rod 32 fixed to the pneumatic assembly and plate 19. Passage 47 leads through passages 56 to a variable restrictor valve 53 and a by-pass valve 54. Thus, if cylinder 31 moves to the left with pneumatic piston 12, then fluid is forced out of the right-hand hydraulic chamber through passage 47. If valve 54 is closed then fluid flows through the restrictor valve 53 to an annular chamber 59 communicating with passage 48 and the left hand hydraulic chamber. The amount of restriction of valve 53 determines the speed of pneumatic piston 12. If valve 54 is opened then flow will be quicker and piston 12 will move faster. A spring-loaded piston 63 takes up variations in volume of hydraulic fluid due to flow between the chambers.
