1318688 Coating apparatus GAF CORP 29 Sept 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 45377/71 Heading B2L [Also in Division Dl] An applicator unit 10 for applying granules to the surface of a continuously moving horizontal sheet 12 (e.g. of roofing material) comprises a driven roller 18 having a cavity 32 in the surface thereof, a granule hopper 16 disposed above the roller, a travelling endless belt 20 carried on idler rolls 22, 24 and 26 and urged against the surface of the cavity roll 18 for a part of a revolution therof, and a distributor roller 28 located at the end of the horizontal reach of the belt 20 to distribute the granules on to the surface of the moving sheet 12. In operation granules 42 are fed to the cavity 32 in the roller 18 as it passes beneath the hopper 16 and are confined therein by the belt 20 until the cavity reaches the lowermost point of the roller when they are deposited on the horizontal reach (20') of the belt (Fig. 4, not shown). The granules are then fed to the distributor roll 28 and drop onto the moving sheet through a gap 40 between a deflector plate 30 and the roll. The rate of travel of the sheet, cavity roller and distributor roll are preferably synchronised so that a predetermined pattern and thickness of granules is deposited on the sheet. Two or more granule applicators may be arranged in tandem each distributing a different material so that a continuous repeating pattern of different materials is produced on the travelling sheet.
