Abstract

1,222,928. Web-coating. EGAN MACHINERY CO. 25 Sept., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 47228/69. Heading D1L. In the metering of web-coating material on an applicator roll by means of a parallel metering roll spaced a small adjustable distance from the applicator roll to provide a metering gap, one of the rolls has fixed bearings, the other roll has bearings which are movable on a pair of hydraulically operated flexible beams, and the fixed and movable bearings carry stops to define the gap. As shown, each bearing block 31 of a movable applicator roll 68 for a web 76 is supported on a flexible beam 69 having a hydraulicallyoperated means 72 and a contact block 63 while each bearing block 22 of a fixed supply/ metering roll 67 carries a wedge-shaped stop 57 movable by means of a hand wheel 62 to vary the gap. In an alternative (Fig. 1), a fixed applicator roll has a movable metering roll carried by a U-shaped beam, one arm of which is more flexible than the other and is fed by a separate fixed roll.
