Abstract

1315981 Making ribbed tubes PEERLESS OF AMERICA Inc 4 Dec 1970 [24 Feb 1970] 57834/70 Heading B3A [Also in Division F4] In a method of making a heat exchanger tube from tubular stock having longitudinal ribs 5 thereon, relative rotation is effected between the tube stock and a cutting tool 15 to cause the tool to slice through the ribs along a line 23, Fig. 7, forming portions 19a which are subsequently bent outwardly by the tool during the said relative rotation, to form on the tube, integral fins 19 which are curved throughout their length; see Figs. 5 and 6. The tube stock is fed longitudinally past the tool 15 by a rotary device 9, Fig. 13, having internal threads bitingly engaged with the ribs 5. In the arrangement shown both the tube stock and the tool are rotated in opposite directions by gears 13 and 32 respectively. In other arrangments the tool only, is rotated (Fig. 1) or the stock only, is rotated (Fig. 14). The tubular stock may be of aluminium, copper or stainless steel.
