Abstract

1315964 Incontinence device L E EDWARDS 25 Sept 1970 [26 Sept 1969 5 June 1970] 47541/69 and 27195/70 Heading A5R An incontinence device for female use comprises a member adapted to apply pressure to the urethra from inside the vagina so as to prevent the flow of urine therefrom said member being secured to the free end of a first limb of a spring clamp, a second limb of the clamp being formed as a support which, in use of the device, bears against the external pubic area of the lower abdomen of the wearer. The incontinence device shown comprises two limbs, 1 and 2, joined by an arcuate member 3. The limb 2 consists of a tube 5 having a rectangular pad 6 at its free end, the pad 6 is curved with its convex surface 7 facing the limb 1, and is provided with shallow corrugations 8. The tube 5 and arcuate member 3 are preferably integrally constructed from a resilient plastics material and have a reinforcement wire 9 passing through them. The limb 1 consists of a curved triangular support 4 to bear against the lower abdomen of the wearer. In a modified embodiment, Figures 4 and 5 (not shown), two metal foil electrode strips (10) are secured in spaced relationship to the convex surface 7 of the pad 6 and are electrically connected to an electric socket (12) mounted on the support 4. An intermittent current is fed to the electrodes via the socket (12), for stimulating the muscle action of the tissue controlling the urethra.
