1288125 Catheter and electrode assembly R A PETERSEN 27 Jan 1970 [4 April 1969] 3918/70 Heading A5R A catheter assembly 10 comprises a flexible tube 15 of rubber, plastics or other electrically insulating material, an electrode assembly 20 comprising a conductive solid rod 21 partly disposed inside the tube 15 and coaxial therewith with a pointed tip 22 extending out of the distal end of the tube 15 through a ring or eyelet 17 of stainless steel or high tensile plastics material, said tip 22 adapted to facilitate the cutting of the body by passing an electric current for the passing therethrough of the tube 15, a cauterising action being simultaneously performed. The electrode assembly 20 is removable from the tube 15 and the extent to which the tip 22 extends from the distal end of the tube is limited by the engagement of shoulder 24 of a cylindrical member 23 formed on the rod 21 at the junction with the tip 22 with the member 17. A tubular insulator 25 extends from the member 23 coaxially with the rod 21 as shown and drainage openings 16 are formed in the wall of the tube 15 in the region of the sleeve 25. A second tubular insulator 30 extends into the tube 15 adjacent the other end of the rod 21 and an electrical terminal connector 35 is placed adjacent to this second insulator 30. In use an electrical generator is connected, one side to the connector 35 and the other to a plate (41) Fig. 1 (not shown) upon which a patient is placed, a circuit being produced via the electrode assembly 20, the patient's body (P), and plate (41) through which high frequency electrical energy is passed to facilitate the insertion of the catheter tube 15 into a part of the body, a passage in the tissue being produced by the electrical energy passing therethrough.
