Abstract
1314818 Piezo-electric elements MULLARD Ltd 27 July 1970 [29 July 1969] 38052/69 Heading H1E [Also in Division H3] In order to improve the bandwidth and impedance matching of a piezo-electric or piezomagnetic transducer attached to a propagating body, e.g. a delay line, the amplitude of the response of the transducer is arranged to decrease continuously in the direction of propagation from a maximum at the boundary of the transducer remote from the propagating body to zero at the boundary adjacent the body, substantially in accordance with the function where d is the total distance between the boundaries and x is the distance from the first boundary at which the response is measured. It is stated that the prescribed variation produces a reactive acoustic impedance which does not change sign (i.e. remains negative) throughout the pass-band and an acoustic resistance which remains substantially constant. The necessary gradation of response may be obtained either by varying the properties of the piezoelectric or piezo-magnetic material or by varying the electric or magnetic field. A combination of both methods may be used. The methods described in Specification 1,208,154 for obtaining a linear variation may be adapted to produce the variation required by the present invention.
