1313109 Printing apparatus COURTAULDS Ltd 16 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 45739/69 Heading B6C In a machine comprising a number of printing heads 2 ... 5 Fig. 1, operating on material passed therethrough continuously, e.g. a machine for printing a pattern of differently coloured bars across a warp of yarns, the operation of each printing head is controlled by a driven pattern disc 6 ... 9, one for each head. In one embodiment, the discs 6 ... 9 are of metal and have parts of their peripheries masked with insulating tape according to the pattern required, and electrical brushes contact the peripheries and operate control circuits for pneumatic piston and cylinder mechanisms for moving presser rollers 2d ... 5d towards dye-coated rollers 2c ... 5c at the requisite times to print the pattern of colour bars on the material. The discs 6 ... 9 are mounted side by side on a shaft (10, Fig. 3) and have a first set of registering holes 6b ... 9b through which a pin (12) is passed, and the pieces of insulating tape are attached in a pattern which visually corresponds to the required printed pattern. However, the discs thus positioned would not produce the required pattern because of the distance to be traversed by the material between successive printing heads. To take account of this, the pin (12) is now withdrawn from the holes 6b ... 9b and the discs are relatively rotated so that the pin can be inserted through a second set of holes 6c ... 9c, the spacing of which allows for the spacing of the printing heads. Instead of using insulating tape as described above, each disc may have a series of holes into which pegs can be fitted, which trip levers for actuating the printing heads. In another form, a jet of air is directed at the periperhal surface of each pattern disc which has holes in the peripheral surface. The holes are plugged according to the pattern required causing changes in the back pressure on the jet to effect the control of the printing heads. In these modified constructions, the pattern can be changed by altering the spacings between the pegs, or the holes which are plugged.
