Abstract

1,019,547. Selective printers. GENERAL PRECISION Inc. Sept. 15, 1964 [Oct. 4, 1963], No. 37649/64. Heading B6F. In a high-speed printer operating from an electrical pulse input or a keyboard the character types are formed by four type elements 30, 32, 34, 36, Fig. 3, which are longitudinally moved to effect impression in a type-head 18, Fig. 5, which is rotated as a whole once for each character formation. A character is formed by the selective operation of the various elements in each of four angular positions. The elements 30-36 are biased away from a stationary platen 56 by springs 60, 62 and are bounced to effect printing by solenoids 64, 66, 68, 70, as determined by input signals coming to a logic network 200, Fig. 9, and by the correct rotative position of the type-head 18. This is controlled by a disc 100 having a light slot 102 and four photodiodes 110, 112, 114, 116. Four of the logic circuits are appropriate to each of the four rotative positions of the type-head 18 and each of the four circuits in each position is relevant to a particular type element. To print the letter A, Fig. 4, it is necessary to operate logic 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14 so that the letter A is built up in the manner shown in Fig. 4; i.e. elements 30, 32, 34 operating in 0 degrees position, elements 30, 32 in 90 degrees position, element 34 in 180 degrees position and elements 30, 32 again in 270 degrees position. The type-head is rotated by a motor 22, and the record tape 50 and ink ribbon 44 fed either in a continuous or step-by-step manner by a motor 52 and gear-box 54.
