Abstract

1312912 Clamps TIMBER RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION 13 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 25048/69 Heading E2B A tie for connecting timber members 12, 12 comprises a screwed rod 14, Fig. 1, which is mounted on a bracket 13 carried by one of the timber members 12 and which has bevelled spring washers 15 thereon, and comprises a cylinder 16, which is bolted to the other timber member 12 and which receives a portion of the rod 14 therein along with the washers 15. The resistance to axial movement of the screwed rod 14 in the disconnecting direction is greater than in the opposite direction. In another embodiment the cylinder 16 and the washers 15 are replaced by a plate 18, Fig. 2, having a hole 17 therein and being pivotally-mounted at 19 on a plate 20 which is secured to one of the members 12. The rod 14 is loosely received by the hole 17 of the plate 18 and the latter is tilted by means of a spring 21, Fig. 2a, so that the rod is free to move in the connecting direction but has its movement resisted in the disconnecting direction. In a further embodiment the plate 18 assembly is replaced by a plate 23, Figs. 3 and 3a, having a hole 22 therein with three inwardly projecting sprung teeth 24 which permit a rod 14 to slide freely in a connecting direction only.
