1310986 Method of positioning dental implants A E EDELMAN 20 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 40115/70 Heading A5R A method of positioning a dental implant 17 in a human mouth, the implant being provided with retaining surfaces 19, comprises inserting into the bone structure of a patient a try-in 11 which is of substantially the same shape as the implant 17 but which is not provided with retaining surfaces, the position of the try-in relative to the jaw bone being used to gauge the position the implant would take up if it were inserted into the opening in the bone structure within which the try-in is located, removing the try-in 11, and inserting the dental implant 17 into the opening vacated by the try-in. The blade 13 of the try-in 11 may be cut and/or bent to conform with the bone structure, and the blade 18 of the implant cut and/or bent accordingly. The try-in is actuated by an impact receiving tooi (16), Figure 1 (not shown), to form a slit (12) in the bone structure and the try-in is inserted and reinserted into the bone structure until it is in the desired orientation with respect to the patients jaw bone. The implant is provided with apertures 19 into which the bone will eventually grow to retain the implant in the slit. An alternative try-in (Figure 7 not shown) is generally cylindrical and is inserted into a cylindrical cavity drilled in the bone structure, the try-in being used to determine the depth of cavity required. The corresponding cylindrical implant (Figure 9 not shown) is provided with retaining surfaces in the form of a screw-threaded portion (38).
