Abstract

1308086 Television camera tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 40746/71 Heading H1D The speed at which a television camera of the vidicon type reacts to variations of light intensity is adversely affected by excess of fast electrons in the scanning electron beam; this is reduced by avoiding a cross-over in the electron gun and arranging that the axial current density of the beam at any point along its length between the cathode and anode of the gun is at most three times the current density on the axis at the cathode. The gun shown in Fig. 3 comprises a cathode 10, a grid 11 having an aperture 28 which has a smallest diameter at least 20 times that of the smallest diameter in the anode aperture, and an anode 12 provided with a small aperture 30 in a larger cylindrical bore 29. References 31-36 indicate equipotentials and references 37-41 indicate electron paths with 6À5 and 50 volts applied to the grid and anode 12. The cathode loading during scan periods should be at least 0À5 A/cm.<SP>2</SP> so that the anode aperture can be small, and the anode potential should not exceed 125 volts in order to reduce energy transfer by interactions between electrons in the beam. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the anode surface facing the grid is plane with a central cylindrical aperture for passage of the beam.
