Abstract

1,055,729. Cathode-ray tubes. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. May 27, 1964 [June 4, 1963], No. 21987/64. Heading H1D. An electron gun comprises a cathode 23, Fig. 2, and first and second cup-shaped grids 31, 33 having aligned apertures, the second grid aperture having, at its end nearest the cathode, a diameter Ad2, which is at least equal to the diameter Ad1 of the first grid aperture, and which is not greater than the diameter Ad2<SP>1</SP> of the far end of the second grid aperture. The effective thickness Et2 of the second grid aperture is greater than one half of Ad2, while the effective thickness Et1 of the first grid aperture is less than one fifth of Ad1. As shown, the second grid aperture is formed by separate, different-sized apertures in space sections of a double grid end wall 55, 57. Alternatively, the apertured portions of double end wall 55, 57 may be in contact, or the second grid may comprise a single end wall formed with a frusto-conical aperture, Figs. 4-8 (not shown). The electron gun may be used in a cathodedriven, display tube, and achieves high transconductance, the second grid providing effective shielding of the first grid-cathode region.
