Abstract
1306804 Stud and socket fastenings E C COLE 10 Dec 1970 [17 Sept 1969 30 Oct 1969] 45704/69 and 53113/69 Heading E2B In a retractable retaining device for freight containers the casing thereof comprises two opposite, parallel side walls 46, 50 and two, opposite, parallel end walls 48, the four walls being formed of at least two metal plates, and separate top and bottom walls 60, 56 formed of metal plates, the plates being assembled and welded together. The walls 46, 48 may be formed by a single plate bent to U-shaped formation, and the wall 50 formed by two co-planar plates disposed in edge-to-edge, spaced-apart relation. As shown, the wall 60 of the casing has therein a hole 70 of rectangular shape and with the shorter sides 72 of part-circular form. Mounted in the casing is a bolt 80 consisting of a shank 82 and an integral head 84, there being below the head a sleeve 86 which is a running fit on the shank. A catch-releasing pin 90 forming a support for the sleeve cooperates with a catch 98 disposed in a channel-shaped member 94 and biased into operative position by a rubber pad 104. A handle 106 secured to a ring 108 is movable to rotate the bolt and is engageable in one of three recesses 112, 114 or 116 formed in the flange 64 of a plate 63, and a pin 122 secured in the shank 82 is adapted to engage keyways 120 defined by part-cylindrical shells 118. In operation, when a freight container 32 has been lowered on to the deck 20, the handle 106 is rotated to engage the recess 114 in which position the pin 122 is disposed above the keyways 120 whereby the bolt can be pushed upwardly to attain a position in which it is held in the release position thereof by the nose 102 of the catch plate 92. By turning the handle 106 to engage the recess 112 to lock the container to the deck the handle rotates the key 122 and the bolt 80 so that the head 84 of the bolt lies cross-wise relative to the sleeve 86 and the hole 74 and socket 38; simultaneously, the catch-plate 98 is moved by the pin 90 into an inoperative position to allow the bolt and sleeve 86 to move downwardly by gravity until the head 84 rests on the base 36 of the corner fitting 34. In a modification, the bolt is retained in the angular positions in which the head 84 occupies the release and locking positions by balls housed in holes in the sleeve 86 and biassed by springs into cooperating recesses in the shank 82.
