1303509 Metallising plastics STAMICARBON N V 3 June 1970 [3 June 19691 26842/70 Heading C7F [Also in Division C3] A plastics article comprising a polymer derived from at least one C 4 - C 16 lactum monomer polymerised in the presence of 0À1 to 25 wt% based on the lactam(s) of at least one polyether soluble in the molten lactam monomer(s) is coated at least partly with metal. In omega lactam, e.g. butyro-, capor-, oenanto-, caprylo-, decyl-, undecyl-, or lauro-lactam, is polymerised in the presence of a polyether such as polytetrahydrofuran, polyepichlorhydrin, a polyglycidylether, polyethylene glycol, polypropyleneglycol, alkylphenoxypolyethyleneoxide-ethanol, a copolymer of ethylene- and propylene-glycols or of ethylene oxide and glycidol, or a polyglycol with endsubstitution, or an inorganic silicon-based polyether, by anionic polymerisation, e.g. in the presence of lactam-N-anions catalysts which may be obtained by reaction of the lactam with an Al, Zn, or alkali metal alkyl, and alkali or alkaline earth metal or an alkaline compound thereof or a Grignard compound. A polymerisation promoter may be added, e.g. an acetylated lactam, an isocyanate, substituted urethane, urea compound, carbodiimide or other compound, polymerisation taking place in a mould at 125- 175‹C. The surface of the plastics is microscopically roughened e.g. by chromosulphuric acid or blasting with CaCO 3 , talcum, or water, sensitized with SuCl 2 , activated with an Ag or Pd salt, and coated with, e.g. Cu or Ni electrolessly, and then electroplated, with e.g. a 0À5Á to 1mm coating of Cu, Ni, Cr, Ag, or Au.
