1303584 Phthalimides INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DE CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS and ENTERPRISE DE RECHERCHES ET D'ACTIVITES PETROLIERES-ELF 19 April 1971 [21 Jan 1970] 20036/71 Headings C2C and C2P [Also in Division C5] Novel compounds of the general Formula I where the hydrocarbon ring is a cyclohexanic, aromatic, dihydroaromatic or tetrahydroaromatic ring, each of R 1 ,R 2 ,R 2 and R 4 (which may be similar or dis-similar) is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic radical, with the proviso that R 1 and R 4 together may represent a divalent C 1-2 radical and that the total number of carbon atoms in R 1 to R 4 is 0-30, n is 2-10, m is 1-10 and R is a univalent aliphatic C 1-30 hydrocarbon radical, are made by reacting a linear amine of formula with an equimolecular amount of an ester-acid or anhydride respectively of formula wherein R 5 is a univalent aliphatic HC radical or an optionally substituted phenyl radical, and removing the water formed during the reaction; the reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent consisting of at least one aromatic hydrocarbon that forms an azeotrope with water, and the water formed during the reaction may thus be removed by azeotropic entrainment. Salts of the compounds of Formula I may be obtained by reaction with a mono- or di-alkyl phosphoric acid of formula R<SP>1</SP>-P(O)-(OH) 2 or (R<SP>1</SP>O) 2 P(O)-OH where R<SP>1</SP>is a univalent saturated aliphatic HC radical and is used in such amount that the number of OH groups does not exceed the number of amine groups. The compounds I and salts thereof are useful as fuel additives (Division C5).
