Abstract
1301665 Making corrugated strips; angular bending; bending cutters ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 5 May 1970 [9 May 1969] 23835/69 Headings B3A B3E and B3W Movement of a corrugated metal strip is restrained by means 5, Fig. 3, engaging with a corner 21 of the strip between a fin 1 and region 2 so as to temporarily restrain the motion of the fin until at least the next following fin is inclined towards the restrained fin. In operation the strip 9, Fig. 1, is fed between a punch 11 and die 10 to form a corrugation which is ejected by an ejector 12. The strip is then stepped forward by a gripper G so that it enters between a die 13 and punch 14 which co-operate to partially form louvres 7, 8, Fig. 8, in the fin 1. After being stripped from punch 14 by plungers 16 and 17 and ejected from die 13 by ejector 15, the corrugated strip is transferred to between plunger 17 and die 20 which complete the louvres 7, 8 so that they extend on both sides of the fins. The corrugated structure is then fed between two endless belts 3 so that, as the corrugations approach a pair of plates 5, the corners 21 are temporarily restrained by the plates 5 so as to cause the fin adjacent the restrained fin to incline towards the latter. The corrugated strip is then compressed by hammering a top plate 31a, Fig. 11, by means of a cam 33, on to the regions passing between the top plate and a base 30. A single plate 5a may be used instead of the plates 5. The corrugated strip is thus compressed to form a structure as shown in Fig. 8. In another embodiment the press tools can have two sections. the first corrugating and partially forming the louvres in the strip and the second conpleting the formation of the louvres. Alternatively the corrugating and complete formation of the louvres can be achieved using a single section press tool.
