1301524 Brazing; making electrodes; casting composite articles WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 22 May 1970 24811/70 Headings B3A B3F and B3R A method of producing an annular electrode tip having a series of radially directed U-shaped coolant passages comprises placing a series of radially directed U-shaped conduits 29, 30 within an annular U-section shell 24, placing a series of spacer elements 31 between those portions of adjacent conduits which lie against the outer wall of the shell, placing an inner shell 22 which is also of annular shape and U-section within the annular U-section space defined by the conduits and brazing together the shells, conduits and spacers to form a substantially integral unified structure, having the desired coolant passages. The conduits may be of circular, square or rectangular cross-section. Brazing may be effected by winding turns of brazing material 51 around the upper part of the inner shell, and heating the assembled unit in a furnace with or without flux 47 and possibly under vacuum or in a reducing atmosphere to a temperature sufficient to melt the brazing material and cause it to penetrate all the spaces between the conduits, shells and spacers. Alternatively the assembled unit with an asbestos cover 34 and superimposed weight 35 covering the inner shell is heated to a predetermined temperature in one furnace and separately heated brazing material from another furnace is poured into the spaces 21, 33 at the upper part of the assembled unit. The shells, conduits and spacers may be of copper and the brazing alloy may have the following compositions:
