Abstract
1301296 Polyurethane-based compositions DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 7 Nov 1969 [16 Nov 1968] 54730/69 Heading C3R [Also in Division F3] An insulating composition for application to the surface of a solid rocket propellant comprises, by weight, 30-90% of a hardenable prepolymer or condensate binder, 5-65% of an inorganic filler in powder or fibre form, and 5-50% of a substance reacting endothermically as the propellant burns. Suitable binders are polyepoxides, polyesters, and polyurethanes. Fillers specified are titanium dioxide, silica, lithopone, barium sulphate, or fibres of asbestos, glass, quartz, boron, silicon, carbon, or titanium. The filler may be heated to 1000‹ C. before being used. Compounds which react endothermically are, for example, ammonium oxalate, oxamide, formaldehyde polymers, and ammonium pentaborate. In examples, polyurethane-based compositions are made by mixing a pre-polymer of toluylene di-isocyanate and butane-1,4-diol with a solution of methylene-bis-o-chloraniline in dimethyl-glycol phthalate and the additives specified above. The insulating composition may be cast round the propellant in a mould or made into sheets and wrapped round the propellant.
