Abstract
1295279 Artificial resin composition UNIVERSAL PROPULSION CO 17 Nov 1969 [15 Nov 1968] 56235/69 Headings C3B and C3P A thermally protective material comprises a binder and a filler mixture. The binder forms a char when subjected to heat. The filler mixture is of at least one Na phosphate and at least one NH 4 borate, or of at least one Na borate and at least one NH- phosphate. On heating there occurs a series of endothermic reactions, each successive reaction occurring at a higher temperature than the previous reaction. The char may be porous to allow the passage of gases. The binder may be a mixture of a polysulphide and an epoxide, e.g. in weight ratio of from 1 : 9 to 9 : 1; also present may be 8-12% by weight, based on the eposide, of a polyamine. The material may be prepared by mixing the epoxide and filler, and mixing the polysulphide, filler, and a curative for the epoxide, and then mixing the two mixtures. The two mixtures are liquid; after mixing and curing, at from room temperature to 350‹F. the joint mixture becomes solid. On subjection to heat, a series of reactions takes place from 100‹ to 290‹ C. These reactions include: Other fillers may also be present. Alternative binders include polyurethane, polybutadiene, neoprene, butyl, or natural rubber polysulphide alone, epoxides (alone), furane resin, polyester resin, phenolic resin, silicone resins, 2-pyrol, and linseed oil. The material may be coated on e.g. steel plates.
