Abstract

1300729 Rolling mills INSTYTUT METALURGII ZELAZA IM STANISLAWA STASZICA 8 June 1970 [7 June 1969 14 April 1970] 27520/70 Heading B3M A cluster mill incorporates cantilevered work rolls 32, Fig. 12, and backing rolls 40 mounted in a frame 3, the frame being slidably supported by columns 4 in a fixed main housing 1. When the frame is moved along the columns by a cylinder 96 the rolls are axially adjusted. For adjustment of the work rolls towards and away from one another the backing rolls are adjusted, the work rolls being urged against their respective backing rolls so that they follow their movement. The backing rolls are carried in frameworks 132, Fig. 13, which are pivoted at 133. A worm-driven screw adjuster moves the two frameworks to adjust the rolls. One work roll is driven by a control shaft 33 from shafts 13 and 15, and the two rolls are drivingly coupled by pinions 9, 10, 11 and 12 (Fig. 11). Alternatively, the rolls may be driven by separate motors and drive shafts. The work rolls have sleeves which can be removed from tapered supports 30, and the backing rolls can similarly be removed from the frame. To remove the backing rolls, tapered shafts 135 and 136 are moved axially towards each other out of their bearing cups 130 by a worm wheel 141, the rolls then being removable. A similar arrangement is shown in Fig. 9, but the backing rolls, and hence the work rolls, are adjusted by eccentrics 116. The eccentrics are coupled to frames 115 in which the backing rolls 40 are supported, the eccentrics being rotatable to move the frames and rolls. A driving shaft 78 (Fig. 11) is coupled by screw adjusters and levers to the two eccentrics such that rotation of the shaft leads to adjustment of the rolls. A further embodiment (Figs. 1-8, not shown) is basically similar to the above embodiments.
