Abstract

1300774 Foldable umbrellas W BAUERMANN & SOHNE GmbH and ROSENKAIMER GmbH 28 May 1970 [7 June 1969 10 June 1969 5 Sept 1969] 25682/70 Heading A4P A telescopic umbrella of the type having a generally rectangular section in plan when folded Fig. 1 has a plurality of support units each formed of a rib 12, a stretcher 19 and an auxiliary strut 25 hinged respectively to a crown 15, a slider 21 and an auxiliary slider 24; and a telescopic shaft 10, 11 which supports the units, the crown 15 being transversely elongated and the sliders being of circular section so that each rib and strut or auxiliary strut does not lie in a plane parallel to the shaft axis. Since the sliders are circular the ends of the stretchers and hence sliding hinges 37 lie on a cirle, Fig. 11, concentric with the shaft and outer rib members 13 being hinged thereto have their tips on a circle also, which allows a normal symmetrical cover to be employed. The differing distances of the pivots of rib members 12 from the shaft are accomodated by differential telescoping of the ribs by an amount L3. The pivots on the main and/or auxiliary sliders may be evenly distributed about the peripheries or may be grouped in two clusters adjacent the long sides of the crown, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The slots for the pivots are parallel sided except the end ones of the groups which may be wedge shaped, Figs. 7 and 9, (not shown). A spacer plate (39) Fig. 15 (not shown) on the slider (30) may be used to position the ribs when folded. A three section rib with an outer telescopic or folding member (43) may be employed when a three part telescopic shaft is used. Opening is initially aided by a rubber ring 23 on the auxiliary slider 24. The pivot slots in the sliders may all have mutually parallel sides Fig.3 (not shown) or may have mutually angled sides on those at the extremities of the groups Fig. 7 (not shown). Similarly the slots in the narrow-sides of the crown may be of mutually parallel wall form while those in the broad sides are wedge-shaped.
