1288580 Injection moulded umbrella frames R MEYER 26 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 47474/69 Addition to 1144627 Heading A4P An umbrella frame is formed from a block which is injection moulded in one piece from plastics material and comprises parallel ribs 3 formed in a first plane and each joined at one end to a first flat strip, which is later folded and joined together at its ends to form a crown 2, struts 5 formed in a second plane inclined to the first plane, and a second flat strip which is later formed into a slider 4 and to which one end of each strut is pivotally connected, the other ends of the struts being connected to the ribs by thin flexible plastics strips, and the ribs being jointed to allow folding thereof. The ribs may be formed in two or three sections which are foldable inwardly, outwardly or laterally, hinges 17 joining the rib-sections being formed by thinning the material of the ribs locally or forming notches therein. Three-part ribs may have the middle section staggered by a rib-width relative to the other sections, or the two outer sections may have half the thickness of the innermost section. The struts 5 may each have two foldable sections, inner ends of the inner sections being supported by a top frusto-conical surface (19), Fig.11 (not shown), of the slider 4 when the umbrella is raised. The crown 2 may have a "flat" shape with a rectangular or polygonal cross-section transverse to the stick. The stick 1 may be telescopic with a handle 18 having pockets to receive parts of the ribs when the umbrella is collapsed.
