Abstract
1398111 Ultrafiltration CALGON CORP 16 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 28374/72 Heading B1X In a method of treating raw sewage using a semi-permeable membrane supported on the internal surface of a porous tube and in which pressure is applied to raw sewage in the tube to effect permeation of water through the membrane a coating comprising from 5 to 75 weight per cent adsorbent and, correspondingly, from 95 to 25 weight per cent absorbent is periodically deposited on the membrane surface, raw sewage is passed through the tube under pressure to effect permeation of water through the membrane until the flux of water is significantly reduced, the coating is flushed away from the membrane surface and that surface is cleaned. The adsorbent may be activated carbon, or charcoal, a metallic sulphide, talc, or an organic resin; the absorbent may be diatomaceous earth vermiculite, green sand, bauxite, zeolite, incinerated sewage solids, fly ash, cement dust or a clay; the composition used to form the coating may also contain a dispersant such as a phosphate. The membrane may be of cellulose acetate.
