Abstract
1398113 Activated carbon composition CALGON CORP 16 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 14342/74 Divided out of 1398111 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1-B2] A composition for precoating reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes comprises a dispersant and an absorbent-adsorbent mixture of 25 to 95% by weight of an absorbent and 75 to 5% by weight of finely divided activated carbon, the percentages being based on the weight of the absorbent-adsorbent mixture. The dispersant may be sodium metaphosphate. The absorbent may be a clay, bauxite, diatomaceous earth, a zeolite, ground-up fireclay or firebrick, incinerated sewage solids, fly ash, cement dust, vermiculite or green sand. The composition may be applied to the membrane by the use of conventional pressure and flow throughout the system.
