Abstract
1396057 Surface-treating compositions ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 22 March 1973 [23 March 1972] 13983/73 Heading C7U [Also in Division B2] A surface is provided with a cured coating by coating it with a solution containing (1) phosphate ions (2) chromate ions (3) ammonium ions and (4) cations selected from Al, Be, Ca, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, K, Na, Sr and/or Zn, said solution being free from complex fluorine-containing acid and having a total concentration of ions (1) to (4) of 0À01-1.2 moles/100ml. of solvent, said ions (1) to (4) being proportionately present as 8 to 79 mole % phosphate ion, 3-45 mole % chromate ion, 1-58% NH 4 <SP>+</SP> and 0À01-49% cation, and heat-curing said coating to render it substantially water-insoluble. The term "phosphate" includes orthophosphate and polymeric phosphorus oxyacids; thus the source of (1) may be H 3 PO 4 , H 2 PO 4 <SP>-</SP>, HPO 4 = or PO 4 #, e.g. a phosphate of a cation (4), an ammonium phosphate or an ammonium phosphate of a cation (4). Chromate sources may be CrO 3 , or chromates or dichromates of NH4 or a cation (4); compound (3) is added as NH 3 , aq. NH 4 OH, or as NH4 phosphate, chromate, carbonate or bicarbonate and (4) is added as an oxide, nitrate, hydroxide, sulphate, chloride, carbonate, bicarbonate, phosphate or chromate; the solution may also comprise a wetting agent, pigment, dye, or other coating agent or Mg cations. The substrate may be glass, stainless steel, brass, Al, Ag, Zn, Cu, carbon steel, Pb, Cr, Ni, Au plate, black Cr or Pt and the heat-curing may be at 400‹F or above for 2 sec.-4 hours; the resulting coating is up to 0.0005" thick.
