Abstract

1,164,639. Coating metals with zinc phosphate. ACHEM PRODUCTS Inc. Dec.22, 1966 [Dec. 22, 1965], No.57420/66. Heading C7U. Zn phosphate coatings are produced on surfaces of Fe, Zn, Cd and their alloys (including steel and galvanized iron) with an aqueous acid phosphatizing bath maintained at 45-75‹C. Initially the bath contains phosphate, Zn and nitrate ions, in such amounts that if phosphate is expressed as P 2 O 5 their relative weight proportions are P 2 O 5 ; Zn; NO 3 = 1; (1À4-2À6); (2À0-4À3), and has a ratio of total acid to free acid of 5-8. A replenishing solution has P 2 O 5 ; Zn; NO 3 = 1; (0À40-0À53); (0À45- 0À70) by weight, and sufficient is used to give the bath an acid ratio of 6-16. Nitrite is added to the bath at the beginning of a coating operation to establish a concentration of at least 0À01% NO 2 by weight, and this is maintained thereafter by autocatalytic generation. Salts e.g. sulphate, nitrate or carbonate of Cu, Ni or Co, or a combination of these, may be added as accelerators.
