139,568. British Thomson - Houston. Co., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 31, 1919. Toothed gearing.-In helical toothed reducing or multiplying gearing for use with ships' turbines &c., the high-speed shaft 5 carries right and left hand helical pinions 7, 8, one or more of each hand, and intermediate shafts 14, 18 carry helical wheels 12, 16 gearing respectively with pinions of opposite hand, and also carry helical or other pinions 13, 17 gearing with wheels 9 on the lowspeed shaft 10. A coupling 21 connecting the shaft 5 with a shaft 20 allows axial adjustment of the shaft 5 to equalize driving-pressure on the teeth. The wheels 12, 16 may slide on their shafts, or the shafts may be divided and their ends connected by couplings allowing relative rotary adjustment in order to equalize driving- pressure between the wheels 12, 13 and 16, 17. End thrusts on. the shafts 14, 18 is balanced by fluid pressure supplied through pipes 23. In a modification, one pinion 7 and one pinion 8 only are used, and the shafts 5, 10 are out of alinement, the pinions 13, 17 not being on diametrically opposite sides of the wheels 9. Some or all of the wheels may be of the type described in Specification 28804/10.
