Abstract
1394972 Rotary positive displacement machines BENWILCO Inc 1 Aug 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 36605/73 Heading F1F A rotary piston I. C. engine comprises a clyindrical rotor 26 in a cylindrical chamber, sinuous peripheral channels 28, 29 in the rotor defining working chambers on either side of annular plates 36, 37, secured to the housing, and gaps in the plates 36, 37 receiving pivoted vanes (51) spanning the channels to separate successive working chambers, inlets and exhaust ports communicating with channels 28 and 29 respectively, and passages 66, (67), Fig. 9 interconnecting the channels adjacent the vanes and functioning as combustion chambers. In operation, combustible mixture, e.g. from a carburetter, is drawn into a cooling chamber in channel 28 and compressed, the compressed mixture then entering passage 66 when port 68 is uncovered by the rotor and being ignited after closure of port 68. Port 69 is then opened by the rotor and the expanding gases enter a cooling chamber in channel 29 to effect an expansion phase reacting against a vane and the channel wall to rotate the rotor. The exhaust gases are then forced out through the exhaust port. Alternatively compression-ignition operation may be used. Cooling is effected by fans 84 drawing air through passages 82, 83, and by finned end plates on the housing. (For Figures see next page)
