Abstract
648,568. Rotary engines. VLIET, G. VANDER. Oct. 12, 1948, No. 26571. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1947. [Class 110(ii)] An internal-combustion engine with axially-sliding vanes 6, 6a, 7 7a has concentric working chambers 9<SP>1</SP>, for suction and compression of gas, and 9 for expansion and exhaust. Inlet and exhaust ports 2, 5 are provided. The vanes, carried by the rotor C, are actuated by rods 22 controlled by rollers running on cams 18, 24; springs may be used in place of one set of rollers. The chamber grooves 9, 9<SP>1</SP> fit over annular projections D 1 , D 2 which are provided with packing strips 10, 11, hollow spaces in the rotor C and stator parts D, E having coolant circulated therethrough. A chamber 8<SP>1</SP> may supply additional compressed gas into the combustion chamber 4<SP>1</SP> to raise the pressure therein. This additional gas may be compressed by a piston 26, Fig. 8, controlled by a cam-track 27. Sliding valves or additional packing strips may regulate this gas supply. Fig. 7 shows a head 13, of a vane 6, which is pivotable on an axis 14 so as to enable the vane to engage closely the sloping end face of an annular projection D2. Packing springs 15 and a strip 16 are provided. The sizes of the compression and expansion chambers 3, 4 may be varied. Two or more engine units may be coupled together. The rotor C may be held stationary and the parts D, E rotate.
