Abstract
1394684 Pre-tanning process AFRICAN TERRITORIES WATTLE INDUSTRIES FUND Ltd 13 Feb 1973 [7 July 1972] 31866/72 Heading C6C A process for the tanning of hides or skins comprises treating a pickled and if desired delined hide or skin in the presence of water with an inorganic sulphate in an amount, excluding water of crystallization, of from 5 to 15% based on the weights of the hide or skin and water, and subsequently subjecting the hide or skin to a conventional tanning process in the presence of the added sulphate. The inorganic sulphate may be magnesium and/or sodium sulphate. The sulphatetreated hide or skin may be tanned with a condensed tannin or the tanning stage may comprise a vegetable pre-tan after which the inorganic sulphate is washed from the hide or skin, and a final tanning stage using a vegetable or chrome tan. The inorganic sulphate may be applied in solid form to the moist hide or skin or as a substantially saturated aqueous solution.
