Abstract
1393756 Curing resin reinforced mouldings KOPPERS CO Inc 21 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 43835/72 Heading B5A A glass fibre reinforced thermosetting resin rod, sheet or tube R is formed by drawing through a heated metal die 11 the reinforcements 6 which have been impregnated with the resin during passage through a resin bath 8, and heated prior to entry into the die 11 by passage between a preheater comprising spaced radio frequency electrodes 10, or a microwave oven. The bath 8 is provided with an aperture 9 for removing excess resin, and the die entry is cooled to prevent solidification of further excess resin which is collected at 14 at the entry to the die. The moulding R is drawn by endless belt mechanism 17 delivering to a cut-off mechanism, and cooled in passage through water sprays 16. The die 11 may be heated by electrical elements, or circulating oil, and cooled by circulating water, and may comprise a tube or a split die and may comprise a chromium plated forming surface. The radio or microwave heaters may be controlled in accordance with the temperature of the resin impregnated fibres measured, e.g. by an infra red pyrometer, between the heaters and the entry to the die. The die may also be mounted for displacement in the moulding direction, and against a spring beam 22, Fig. 2, along rods 18 so that an increased traction of the mechanism 17 resulting from too great a hardening of the resin upstream of the die, deflects the beam 22 to sequential actuate microswitches 24, 23, the switch 24 illuminating a signal lamp and the switch 23 cutting the power input to the preheaters. In the Fig. 5 embodiment, (not shown), impregnated fibres for a moulded strip are drawn from the impregnating bath through a spaced rod pair, and through a further spaced rod pair guide downstream of the radio frequency or microwave heater, a pair of fibrous mats for opposed surfaces of the moulding being drawn through impregnation baths and into the die also downstream of the radio frequency or microwave heater. The resin comprises polyester of ortho-phthalic or iso-phthalic nature, fire retardant resin based on tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, and resin based on ethylene, propylpropylene, dipropylene, and neopentyl glycol. The reinforcement comprises rovings, mats, or woven glass fabrics and, where the moulding includes fibres pre-bonded in a required spatial relationship, these are drawn into the die downstream of the preheaters, as in the Fig. 5 embodiment, to avoid softening of the binding agent thereby.
