Abstract
1392285 Boots BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO LTD 27 March 1972 [27 March 1971] 8243/71 Heading A3B [Also in Division B2] A progressive side-lasting machine such as that described in Specification 1132042 is provided with adhesive applying means which feeds the adhesive in a rod form along a helical path through a melt chamber in step with operating requirements. Feed of adhesive to melt chamber (Fig 4) The rod R of adhesive is urged up a tube 145 by means of a feed member 149 having two feed pawls 151 which grip rod R through slots 147 in the tube 145. The member 149 is reciprocated, once for each side-lasting operation, by piston rod 155. On downward movement of member 149, the feed pawls 151 skid on rod R which is held by check pawls 185. The rod R then passes along a flexible tube 69 to the melt chamber. Melt chamber and nozzle The melt chamber comprises (Fig 3) copper tubing 66 helically coiled about and brazed to a metal cylinder 64 into which is inserted a heater 65. Rod R enters the tubing 66 and molten adhesive passes along passage 42 to nozzle 6 which is controlled by a needle valve. The valve needle 28 seats at 30 and is operated via a lever by a piston-and-cylinder in step with the operating cycle. In a modified melt chamber (Fig 5, not shown) the helix of copper tubing is contained in a block of cast aluminium and the heater is placed in a bore in the block so as to be disposed within the coils of the helix.
