Abstract

1391542 Modified torque yarn LEESONA CORP and LEX TEX LTD 30 March 1972 [10 May 1971] 14980/72 Headings D1F and DID A method of modifying torque in a thermoplastic yarn comprises passing a yarn through a first heating zone and a first cooling zone, false twisting the yarn in said zones and overfeeding the torque stretch yarn within a range of 5% to 25% through a second heated zone and a second cooling zone and reverse twisting the yarn in said zones to an extent that the twist per unit length is less than 25% of the twist per unit length employed in the torque stretch yarn producing process; the residual torque thus being reduced. The process is preferably performed continuously on apparatus comprising in sequence a yarn feed bobbin 10, a feed roller 20 associated with a first heater 30, a first false twist means 40 e.g. a spindle, a second feed roller 50 overfeeding the yarn Y to a second heater 60, a second false twist means 80, a third feed roller 90 and a take-up bobbin 100. The over feed to the second heater 60 is maintained within the range 5-25%. The false twist means 80 preferably comprises a set of nip rolls 81A mounted for rotation about their axis in a direction to advance the yarn fed between them, the rollers 81A being mounted on a rotatable cage 82. The cage 82 is rotatably mounted on a fixed member 87 carrying a stationary bevel gear 86A which meshes with bevel gears 85A, 85B mounted in the cage 82. Gear wheels 84A, 84B are mounted on the same shafts as the bevel gears 85A, 85B are rotated by them, this rotation causing rotation of gear wheels 83A to rotate the rollers 81A.
