Abstract

1389832 Shaft seals AEROQUIP (UK) Ltd 7 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 7159/71 Heading F2B A seal assembly comprises a shaft sealing ring 11 having a spring-biased sealing lip 19 for sealing against leakage of liquid (oil) from one side 16 of the ring, and means 23 for applying gas pressure (compressed air) to the other side of the ring whereby gas escaping past the ring reduces leakage of the liquid. Compressed air may be supplied through an apertured ring 23 or a sintered metal ring (37), Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown). The apertures 24 or the sintered metal may serve as a throttle. The sealing ring 11 for the oil may be made of rubber, or leather, Fig. 2 (not shown) and a further lip-type sealing ring 12 may also be provided. Instead of the ring 12, a seal may be provided by a plate (36) which surrounds the shaft with a clearance.
