Abstract
1,239,154. Seals. NUOVO PIGNONE S.p.A. 23 April, 1969 [22 May, 1968], No. 20849/69. Heading F2B. A seal for the gap 5 between cylindrical surfaces comprises an anti-extrusion ring 8 in the form of a metal split ring of trapezium crosssection, a channel-shaped sealing ring 15 having its side walls directed away from the antiextrusion ring, a resilient ring 17 mounted between the side walls, a chamber 20 between the sealing ring and resilient ring, and means such as notches 18 which communicate the chamber with the higher pressure side of the gap. As shown, a P.T.F.E. ring 16 is interposed between the rings 8, 15 and the side walls of the ring 15 and pressed against the cylindrical surfaces with a force F<SP>11</SP>. The split in the ring 8 closes as shown in Fig. 9 under the force F produced by the pressure P<SP>11</SP> which passes into the chamber 20 through the notches 18.
