Abstract
138,895. Empire Machine Co., (Assignees of Chamberlin, B. D.). Nov. 15, 1913, [Convention date]. Delivering molten metal. -Relates to the delivery of uniform charges of mol. ten glass from tank furnaces. The object of the invention is to prevent or to minimize the chilling or scarring of the charge bv the shearing-mechanism. Molten glass flows from the tank 1 through a control valve 22 and down a spout 3, level with the end of which is a fixed water-cooled ledger blade 6<a>. The charges are severed by a water-cooled fourarmed rotating shearing-device 10 and drop through a hole 20 on to a carrier, which couveys them to the forming mechanism. The shearing- mechanism is enclosed in a chamber 4 which is heated by burners 5. By this means, the end nf the glass stream flowing from the spout 3, which has been chilled by the last shearing-operation, is re-heated by the hot gases in the chamber. The fluidity of the glass stream, and hence its cross-section, can be regulated bv the burners 5.
