Abstract

1388220 Separation of alkyl acrylates from acrylic acid HOECHST AG 13 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 57772/73 Heading C2C A process for the separation of alkyl acrylates containing from 4 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical and boiling at temperatures between 130‹ and 170‹ C. under a pressure of 760 mm. of mercury, from a mixture containing acrylic acid, comprises mixing, in a distillation zone, the acrylic acid-containing mixture with between 1 and 25 parts by weight, per part by weight of acrylic acid, or a polar solvent boiling at a temperature higher than 180‹ C. (760 mm. Hg) and being selected from the group consisting of amides, alcohols, ketones, nitriles, esters, sulphones or sulphoxides; distilling off the alkyl acrylate and removing the solvent containing acrylic acid as a base product. The preferred starting material is a crude esterification mixture containing alkyl acrylate, acrylic acid, the appropriate C 4 -C 6 alkanol and byproducts.
