Abstract

1387893 Vehicle steering systems CAM GEARS Ltd 17 Oct 1973 [7 Nov 1972] 51321/72 Heading B7H A vehicle servo-steering system includes a plurality of steering axles Al, A2, a mechanical interconnection between the steering gear of the axles, a single torque responsive valve 4 which senses the magnitude and direction of steering column torque and which controls fluid supply to a steering servomotor 8. In one embodiment the steering column mounts the torque responsive valve 4 and drives a pinion at 3 which engages the rack bar of the axle A1. The pinion at 3 is directly coupled for rotation by a shaft 11 to a pinion at 12 which engages the rack of axles A2. The servomotor 8 is constituted by a double acting hydraulic ram provided on axle A1. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the pinion of the first axle is connected to the output of a double acting or reversible rotary servomotor mounted on the steering column.
