Abstract

1386589 Seaming non-metallic sheet material BRITISH VISQUEEN Ltd 6 July 1972 [22 July 1971] 34450/71 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] An open end of a plastics-film bag 2 is heat sealed by folding over the juxtaposed edges of the end upon one wall of the bag to form a doubled region 3 at the end; gripping the doubled region 3 between a pair of opposed members 1 so that the fold of the region 3 protrudes beyond the members; heating the region 3 along the fold thereof so as to soften the plastics-film material and form along the fold a bead seal (7), Fig. 6 (not shown), including all the plastics-film layers at the fold, and so as to soften the doubled plastics-film layers to a depth greater than that required to form the bead seal; and pressing together the softened layers below the depth required to form the bead seal whilst allowing the bead seal to relax. A "bead seal" is defined as an elongate seal having a thickness exceeding the combined wall thicknesses of the layers of material included in the seal. As shown, the doubled regions 3 of filled bags 2 are gripped by conveyer chains 1 and fed past a first set 4 of radiant heater bars to heat the exposed part of the region 3 and then past a second set 5 of radiant heater bars arranged triangularly to concentrate their heat at the fold. Crimping rollers 6, made from or coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, press the plastics-film layers together below the folds to form the seal. The rollers 6 may be cooled, e.g. by internal water cooling or by shielded air currents, and are driven from the drive rollers 8 of the chains 1. The bag may be a side-gussetted bag of polyethylene film.
