Abstract

1386421 Inertia switches ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 17 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 7365/72 Heading H1N A crash sensing switch comprises a housing 14, rollers 10, 12, guides 16, 18, a flexible spring band 20 held in tension by springs 46, 34 and extending along guides 16, 18 and around rollers 10, 12, switching contacts 32, 38, 42 being operable by movement of rollers 10, 12 off the end of guide surface 18. Under impact, roller 12 rolls off guide 18 on to reset device 52 which when pushed upwards by reset button 54 restores roller 12 to guide 18. Band 20 is of different effective stiffness at the points A, B, where band 20 leaves rollers 10, 12, for producing a net force under normal conditions urging rollers 10, 12 towards one end of band 20 against a stop 50. The difference in stiffness is achieved by cutting a slot in band 20 between points A and A<1>, A<1> being the point at which band 20 leaves roller 10 when the rollers have rolled fully to the right. To adjust the operating force to compensate for different thicknesses of band, part of the slot is tapered exponentially and the position on the taper at which band 20 leaves roller 10 is varied by moving rollers 10, 12 to the right by adjusting stop 50. Formulae are given for calculating the taper. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,181,636 and 1,217,947.
