Abstract
1385301 Cooling wire COMPAGNIE D'ETUDES ET DE PARTICIPATIONS INDUSTRIELLES 4 Jan 1973 [6 Jan 1972] 567/73 Heading C7N Wire is continuously patented by subjecting it to surface cooling by immersion in a co-current stream of cooled molten lead, the wire being then submerged in a lead bath receiving that stream so that temperature equalisation occurs by transmission of heat from the core before any structural transformation takes place. Transformation then takes place within the bath at uniform temperature. Suitable apparatus includes a tank 1, surrounded at its head end by cooling chambers 2, 3 through which air is blown; the tank is subdivided by partition 70 over which lead overflows from zone 8 to zone 9 as it is recirculated by pump 15 from the wire discharge end of the tank through conduit 14 to the head end, where it is caused by deflector 17 to follow a circulatory path 'f' adjacent to the cooling jacket. Parallel wires 23 enter the tank over guide 19 at a temperature T 3 , e.g. 950C and then pass into the overflowing stream of lead where the surface temperature is reduced to T 1 . Temperature equalisation to T 2 then occurs before guide roll 26 is reached, and transformation occurs at that constant temperature between guides 26, 27 in the time interval S 1 -S 2 .
