Abstract

1384890 Coatings for ferrous metals ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 20 Nov 1972 53563/72 Heading C1M A protective coating composition, for application as a slip to ferrous metals, comprises on a 100 parts total weight basis: (a) 25-55 parts of powdered aluminium; (b) 20-50 parts of homogenous fritted glass consisting of, in per cent by weight on the oxide basis, 25-50 B 2 O 3 , 10-50 SiO 2 , 10-20 Li 2 O, Na 2 O and/or K 2 O, and 10-40 CaO, MgO and/or ZnO; (c) 14-27 parts of mill addition consisting of 8-15 parts of at least one reducible compound selected from the oxides of Co, Ti, Zn and Zr and the sulphides of Sb and Cd, and 6-12 parts of at least one refractory compound selected from alumina, calcium and magnesium silicates, clay and bentonite; and (d) buffer (e.g. boric acid) sufficient to maintain the slip pH at 7À3-7À8. Optionally, up to 10 parts of lithium titanate flux may be added, as may urea and magnesium sulphate. The aqueous slip is applied to the surface of a ferrous metal, dried, and fired at 1250-1600‹ F., to give a coating preferably 3-5 mils. thick. The metal, which may be low-carbon steel, is preferably initially cleaned by pickling or sand blasting. The glass undergoes phaseseparation at the firing temperature to form a seal-forming borosilicate glass liquid phase (with a Li, Na or K network modifier) and a wetting borosilicate glass liquid phase whose network modifier is Ca, Mg or Zn.
